The Bear Stock: The Bear Inn Bar & Restaurant

Over the last few years, Brenda and Richard have brought back some of the values that originally made The Bear a thriving local meeting place (whilst continuing to provide some truly fantastic home cooked cuisine).

Staff at The Bear believe that through a commitment to quality of service and value for money, they will continue to entice customers old and new, to enjoy the relaxing environment that has been carefully nurtured.

With coffee mornings, dining, live music nights, regular calendar events and some fine beers The Bear is one of the most thriving pubs in Stock and the surrounding area.

Cantine hopped a Trailways bus from Woodstock to Los Angeles, where he landed a number of restaurant jobs, then later spent six years in New York City working as a server, bartender, and manager, and eventually teaching in the dining room program at the French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Center).

Certain items are sacrosanct — the filet mignon with port garlic sauce and stilton cheese garlic butter, and the roasted chicken with green peppercorn sauce — but what does change carries an international influence that belies Mann’s French culinary training (Asian-inspired green tofu on soba noodles, for example, appeared on the menu recently).

Fat little triangles of fried herb polenta croutons and slices of crisp, sweet pear rimmed a pile of peppery greens topped with crumbled gorgonzola cheese and a mountain of crunchy, shoestring-style red beets.

It is immediately clear that there is an understated see and be seen thing going on here The standout appetizer was a plate of thin-sliced red and golden beet rounds drizzled with a rich balsamic glaze, topped with a heap of beautifully golden breaded and fried Coach Farm goat cheese, and offset by a suggestion of crispy frisee.

The restaurant serves as the entrance to a 15-acre complex that has been the heart of Woodstock’s music scene since 1969 when it was purchased by Albert Grossman (manager of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and others).

A great steak knife is a wonderful thing, and Restaurant 1915 at the Bear Mountain Inn provides a terrific one.

The handsome building, just inside Bear Mountain State Park off the Bear Mountain Bridge, suffered through several attempted restorations after closing in the early 2000s.

Sitting in the dining room, with its soaring ceiling and extraordinary woodwork, it is easy to imagine a meal in the space nearly 100 years ago.

Monopolizing our attention wasn’t easy, because Restaurant 1915’s executive chef, Michael Matarazzo, is cooking up some creative meals, taking familiar items and giving them an intriguing twist.

Steamed mussels got a little kick from prosciutto di Parma and grilled garlic Tuscan bread.

In the time of Peter the Great, the czar’s chief of police trained a bear to offer visitors a cup of pepper brandy.

But a challenge of sorts awaits on the drinks menu: horseradish vodka, infused in house.

According to Vitaly Sherman, who runs the restaurant with his wife, Maria (known as Masha), Peter the Great mandated that all Russian inns keep a stash of horseradish vodka in their cellars for the rejuvenation of weary travelers.

Blintzes are near-weightless kerchiefs of dough, to be folded around sour cream and red caviar.

Roughly patted pelmeni come crammed with chicken or beef and pork in the Siberian style, attended by sweated onions and more sour cream.
